Amendments

Although my film will be based on French New Wave, I still want it to have a modern twist to it to hail in my target audience which I hope will not be as niche because of this.
Adding a dark, comical twist to my trailer I believe could be the desired action that has to be made in order to attract a broader audience.
I order to do this I therefore have to make my storyline slightly more complex.
One possibility could be if I bought in a love triangle. However, this wouldn't be the average cliche love triangle because both the two women know that this man is two-timing, although he doesn't. He then begins to realise when they start to act more strange. The two women now desire not his love, but his blood. Because of the feminist movement going on at the time in Britain women were starting to feel far more empowered and I believe I can bring this into it. Although they 'desire his blood' this trailer could still have a comical value intertwined into the storyline.
In the opening shot we have the side profile of a man smoking casually and then there is a low angle on a young woman by his side. There is a cut edit back to this man smoking but this time the low angle is on another woman. This gives the audience the idea that he is two-timing. The next scene cuts to the first woman walking with the man down a road, they are smoking and laughing. We only see the back of them until the 2nd woman walks into the shot, a face that lets the audience know that she knows what's going on.

Storyline Ideas extended

In my trailer the characters will not be speaking and there will be no diagetic sound yet there will be non-diagetic sound. There will be the voice of a french woman over the top of the music narrating to film, she will be speaking in french with subtitles in English. With the subtitles it makes the audience feel a part of something they never previously understood and gives them a sense of satisfaction.

From the makers of 'fly away' and 'Jean et Paul' we give you...
'Par les createurs de s'envoler' et 'Jean et Paul' nous vous donnon...'
This line will be said in French with the subtitle of English. The voice over will be said in a playful and seductive manor.

When constructing my storyline and script I tried to construct my own interpretation on French New Wave.
I have incorporated jump cuts and long shots, yet I still will have the intimate close ups so the audience will feel the relationship the characters have.
The characters will not be saying anything, I will let the narrator tell the story with short, isolated words which will be very static, cosy and unambiguous. There will be 'cool jazz' background music however there will be pauses where the characters get close to show intimacy and the effect of 'cutting tension with a knife'.
In order to effectively attract my audience I need to capture the rawness and he individuality of French New Wave. I need to include a personal artistic expression and should bear a stamp on personal authorship which is what is needed to properly connect with an audience.
Many of the French New Wave films include, briefly, jump-cuts, voiceovers, location filming, rapid editing, direct sound, stripped down plots and mobile camera work. Conclusively I am planning to use all of these. However, I have come across a problem with location filming; because I am setting it in the 60's around me there will be modern mise-en-scene. Therefore I must be very careful were I film as to not include anything modern in the background.

Storyboard.

Here is a brief storyboard of what I plan to do for my trailer. I have chosen to include subtitles as that's what many French New Wave films include. The reason I have chosen to use subtitles is because I don't want to alienate my audience, because if someone doesn't understand what is happening they will feel apathetic towards the whole project. The subtitles also describe what's going on, the personalities of the characters and the shots I have used. Each shot I have used will be simple mid; long or close up shots. If I choose to include the slanted shots that are used in film Noir I may, just to develop my codes and conventions more slightly. This is not my final idea for my trailer however it is how I want my trailer to hold many of the qualities that is included in my storyboard.

Story line.

In the trailer I plan to only include two people.
In the 1960's there were riots about universities in France; I plan to include this in the storyline; two people feel really passionate about this cause, however they begin to fall in love. The girl tries to stop what is happening because she wants to focus on her studies and the protest, despite this they begin to fall; although the boy has a big secret to tell the girl. When rioting in Paris he got arrested for seriously injuring a policeman, he is now on the run and wants the girl to come with him. She is torn between their love and her education but in the end runs away with him. During the way they almost get caught a few times, until he is finally caught and they are broken apart.

When using elements of this in my trailer I must make sure that this does not come across 'cheesily'. (For want of a better word.)

Ideas

We must first consider the possible storyline for our film. We must examine whether they will be believable, will attract our chosen target audience or have the right qualities for a film influenced by French new wave.

Here are some sub genres that may influence us:

  • Gangster film, criminal on the run with his girlfriend
  • Forbidden love
  • Following the life of a drug addict
  • Hatred and revenge

Films in the industry that we could use for inspiration:

  1. 'Made inthe U.S.A'
  2. 'Band of outsiders'
  3. 'Breathless' (1983)
  4. 'Stolen kisses'
  5. 'Paris belongs to us'

I will look at these films and their storylines and see what is the codes and conventions of a 'french new wave' story-lines are.

Storylines of existing French New Wave Films

Breathless:
Micheal Poiccard, an irresponsible sociopath and small-time thief, steals a car and impulsively murders the motocycle policeman who pursues him. Now wanted by the police he renews his friendship with a hip American girl studying Journalism whom he met in Nice a few weeks earlier. They plan to get away to Italy, even with his face all over the media, Poiccard is deluded and recklessly persues his love of American movies and his interest with the beautiful American.

Made in the USA:
Set in the near future, Paula a leftist writer, goes from Paris to the French town of Atlantic City when she learns of a death of an old friend and lover. On the surface all the clothes are bright colours and trendy, the faces beautiful. Underneath, little is clear people talk to Paula as if she's in Alice in Wonderland. The murder victoms nephew and a political party's hired hands hover around Paula.

Woman is a Woman:
Angela, a strip tease artist, wants to have a baby and tries to persuade her boyfriend Emile to go along with the idea. Emile with have none of it so she goes after Emile's best friend Alfred.

The fireman's ball:
The fire department in a small town is having party when the ex-boss of the department celebrates his 86th birthday. The whole town is invited but things don't go as planned., someone is stealing the prizes and the candidates for 'Miss Fire department beauty contest are neither willing or beautiful.

After looking at story lines of the typical French new Wave films, I have come to the conclusion that when creating my storyline it is necessary that I keep it simple with an underlying moral, or sub-genre of politics and marxism.
I am yet to decide whether
